Kenya has suspended preparations for a United States-run Ebola quarantine facility following a court order stopping construction activities at the site.
Health Minister Aden Duale told the court that all construction, site preparation, and related activities at the Laikipia airbase facility had been halted pending further court decisions.
The decision came after the minister was found in contempt for failing to comply with earlier orders to stop work on the project.
The planned facility, located near Nanyuki, was designed with about 50 isolation beds and was expected to be managed by US medical personnel to handle possible evacuations of American citizens exposed to Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo).
The project has faced strong opposition from Kenyan citizens, rights groups, doctors, and health workers, who accused authorities of developing the facility without proper public consultation.
Protests against the plan have taken place, with three people reportedly killed during unrest near the facility.
Critics also questioned Kenya’s acceptance of a $13.5 million US Ebola preparedness fund, arguing that the arrangement could increase health risks despite Kenya having no confirmed Ebola cases.
The latest Ebola outbreak in DR Congo has recorded more than 1,000 confirmed cases and hundreds of deaths, while neighbouring Uganda has also reported confirmed cases.
