A Chinese supercomputer has taken the position of the world’s most powerful computer, ending nearly a decade of US dominance in the global supercomputing rankings.
The machine, named LineShine, topped the latest TOP500 list announced at the International Supercomputing Conference in Hamburg, Germany.
This marks the first time since 2017 that a Chinese-built supercomputer has ranked number one. The TOP500 list, published twice yearly since 1993, is widely used to measure global computing power.
LineShine replaced the United States’ El Capitan supercomputer as the world leader. The Chinese system, located in Shenzhen, achieved a performance speed of 2.2 exaflops, meaning it can carry out about 2.2 quintillion calculations per second.
A major achievement is that LineShine was built using Chinese-designed processors, rather than the US-made chips commonly used in many leading supercomputers.
The US still holds strong positions, with three of the top four supercomputers on the list, including El Capitan at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California.
Germany’s JUPITER Booster completed the top five rankings, representing Europe’s strongest entry.
