Israeli forces have opened fire in southern Lebanon, killing two people and injuring two others, according to Lebanon’s state news agency, raising tensions over a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.
The Lebanese National News Agency (NNA) reported that Israeli soldiers fired machine guns at two men who were near an excavator clearing a road close to the city of Nabatieh. The incident marks the first reported deaths from Israeli fire in Lebanon in three days.
Hezbollah condemned the attack, describing it as a “treacherous” and “blatant” violation of the ceasefire, but the group did not announce whether it would retaliate.
The Israeli military said it targeted “armed terrorists” who it claimed posed an immediate threat to its troops in the Ali al-Taher area, part of a southern Lebanon security zone.
Hezbollah officials warned that any Israeli violation of the truce would be met with a response. The group said it remains prepared to confront further attacks.
Israeli officials said the military would continue operations against what it described as Hezbollah infrastructure and would maintain its security zone in southern Lebanon.
The latest conflict has caused thousands of deaths and forced more than a million people from their homes, according to reports. Negotiations involving Israel, Lebanon, and the United States are continuing, with Lebanon demanding an Israeli withdrawal from southern areas and Israel calling for Hezbollah’s disarmament.
Many Lebanese residents remain doubtful that the ceasefire will last, saying previous agreements have been followed by renewed fighting.
