A mother who was rescued from the remains of her collapsed home in Venezuela alongside her 18-day-old baby has described how her child gave her the strength to survive the disaster.
Dayana Patino said her newborn son, Juan David, became her motivation to remain awake and alert while they were trapped beneath the rubble following powerful earthquakes that struck the country.
“As long as he was alive, I was going to be alive,” she said, explaining that she repeatedly touched her baby to confirm he was still breathing.
The rescue of Dayana and her son has gained international attention, with many people describing it as a symbol of hope after the earthquakes left thousands dead and many others missing.
Dayana said she was washing dishes in her apartment in La Guaira when the earthquake struck. She grabbed her baby, believing it was only a minor tremor, but the building suddenly collapsed.
“I felt like I was flying, then I felt like I was sinking in water and dirt,” she recalled.
Trapped under concrete with one leg pinned, Dayana said she tried to conserve her energy and only screamed when she believed rescuers were nearby.
She later found hope when she felt a Bible beneath the rubble and saw a small beam of light above her.
Her chance of survival came when she heard her brother calling her name. She screamed for help, and he promised he would not leave until she was rescued.
A careful rescue operation later brought both mother and baby out alive.
Dayana suffered injuries to her legs, while baby Juan David escaped with only minor injuries.
Her husband, Gerson, said seeing his wife and son rescued was a miracle.
“I thought they were dead. When I saw my son, I felt like I was born again,” he said.
The family lost their home and belongings, and their pet dog remains missing. Despite the tragedy, they said they are determined to rebuild their lives.
“We lost almost everything, but we are still here. We will rebuild,” Gerson said.
