French President Emmanuel Macron hosted Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq on Monday for talks focused on reducing tensions in the Middle East and ensuring the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz without transit fees.
The meeting in Paris marked Sultan Haitham’s first official visit to France. The two leaders discussed maritime security and called for “free and unconditional” passage through the strategic waterway.
The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, is one of the world’s most important shipping routes, with about 20 per cent of global oil and gas trade passing through it before the recent conflict.
Although the United States and Iran reached an agreement in June to end the conflict that followed US-Israeli attacks, tensions remain over Tehran’s consideration of introducing transit charges for ships using the strait.
Macron has warned Iran against imposing any tolls, saying efforts should be made to keep the route open and free for international shipping.
Oman, which has a history of mediating between Iran and Western countries, is playing a key role in diplomatic efforts to maintain safe passage through the waterway.
France and the United Kingdom have also proposed a maritime security and mine-clearance mission to help reopen the strait following the end of fighting.
During the talks, Macron and Sultan Haitham were also expected to sign agreements aimed at strengthening cooperation between France and Oman in areas including trade, science, culture, and industry.
