Millions Join Ashura Mourning Across Iran, Officials Pay Tribute to Khamenei

Millions of people across Iran have marked Ashura, with the country’s leaders saying they will never forget the death of Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, who was described as a martyr by Iranian officials.

President Masoud Pezeshkian said Ashura represents the message of Imam Hussein (AS) and his resistance against injustice and oppression.

Speaking during Ashura prayers in East Azarbaijan Province, Pezeshkian said the sacrifice of Imam Hussein and the martyrs of Karbala continues to inspire people to stand against oppression.

He said honoring Imam Hussein should not only be through mourning but also through action, adding that society must fight poverty, hunger and injustice.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also paid tribute to Ayatollah Khamenei, saying Shia Muslims remember Imam Hussein as the “Master of Martyrs” because of his sacrifice at Karbala.

This year’s Ashura is the first observed in Iran since the death of Ayatollah Khamenei, according to Iranian officials.

Across Iranian cities, mourners dressed in black took part in traditional Ashura ceremonies, including processions, religious chants, chest-beating rituals and the distribution of food to the needy.

For Shia Muslims, Ashura commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussein and his companions at the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD, symbolizing the struggle for justice and resistance against oppression.
