The Nigerian Army has announced plans to recruit and train an additional 28,000 soldiers as part of efforts to strengthen its fight against insecurity across the country.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, disclosed this on Friday in Abuja during a briefing ahead of the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration.
The Army said the recruitment expansion followed the establishment of a new training depot at Amasiri Edda, making it the third facility dedicated to training new recruits for the Nigerian Army.
According to the Army Chief, increasing manpower is essential alongside modern military equipment in tackling security threats.
The new recruitment drive is expected to boost troop numbers and improve operations against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other criminal activities.
The Army also announced the creation of additional brigades and units, as well as a review of its force structure to close deployment gaps and respond faster to emerging threats.
Lt. Gen. Shaibu said the military is improving its capabilities through modern technology, new equipment, strategic partnerships, and better welfare programmes for personnel.
He assured Nigerians that the Army would continue to protect the country while respecting human rights and operating within legal guidelines.
The 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration will feature prayers, public awareness programmes, military exhibitions, medical outreach, and a grand finale in Port Harcourt on July 6.
The event will also include the African Land Forces Forum 2026, bringing together African military leaders, defence experts, and security officials to discuss regional security cooperation.
