The Kaduna State Government has started giving financial support of N100,000 each to 97 former inmates who were recently granted pardon by Governor Uba Sani.
The payment was made on Friday at the Kaduna Medium Security Custodial Centre, following the governor’s promise to assist the beneficiaries after their release on June 12 as part of Democracy Day celebrations.
The former inmates were released under the governor’s constitutional power of mercy, while the state government also paid fines for some of them to help secure their freedom.
Assistant Controller of the custodial centre, Dalhat Ibrahim, said the support would strengthen rehabilitation efforts and help the ex-inmates rebuild their lives.
He encouraged them to use the money as startup capital for small businesses and avoid returning to crime.
Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Protocol, Mohammed Suleiman, said the payment marked the final stage of the clemency programme.
“We are fulfilling the governor’s promise by providing financial assistance of N100,000 to each released inmate,” he said.
Some beneficiaries expressed gratitude, saying the support would give them a fresh opportunity to start businesses and reintegrate into society.
The initiative is part of Kaduna State’s criminal justice reforms aimed at reducing overcrowding in correctional facilities, promoting rehabilitation, and supporting the successful return of former inmates to their communities.
