South Korea’s former First Lady, Kim Keon Hee, has been sentenced to seven years in prison after being convicted of accepting bribes and luxury gifts in exchange for political favours.
The Seoul Central District Court ruled that Kim received expensive jewellery, a designer handbag and other gifts from individuals seeking influence during and after her husband Yoon Suk Yeol’s presidency.
The court said Kim used her position as first lady to provide jobs and business-related advantages, describing the acceptance of the gifts as deliberate.
She was also fined 64.8 million won (about $42,000), and authorities ordered the confiscation of the items.
Kim denied the allegations, arguing that the gifts were not bribes. Her lawyers said they would appeal the ruling.
The court found that she received jewellery worth more than 100 million won from a construction company owner in return for helping his son-in-law secure a government position. It also said she received a luxury Dior handbag and other gifts linked to requests involving public officials.
The former first lady is already serving another prison sentence after being convicted earlier in the year over stock manipulation and bribery allegations involving the Unification Church.
Her husband, former President Yoon Suk Yeol, is also imprisoned after receiving a life sentence related to charges connected to sending military drones into North Korea and an alleged attempt to justify martial law in 2024.
Yoon was removed from office in 2025 after impeachment proceedings.
