Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem has called on Israel to completely withdraw its forces from Lebanon without any conditions, as US-mediated negotiations between Lebanon and Israel continue.
Qassem made the statement in a televised speech on Friday during the Ashura commemoration, saying Israel must leave “every inch” of Lebanese territory.
The demand comes while Israeli forces remain deployed in parts of southern Lebanon. Israeli officials have said their troops will remain until they believe security conditions are met.
The latest round of talks in Washington has focused on efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement and discuss the withdrawal of Israeli forces. However, disagreements remain, particularly over Hezbollah’s weapons and role in southern Lebanon.
Lebanese officials have pushed for a full ceasefire and an Israeli withdrawal, while Israel has reportedly demanded Hezbollah’s complete disarmament.
Despite a reduction in fighting following a recent ceasefire, Israeli strikes have continued. Reports say attacks hit areas in southern Lebanon, with casualties recorded.
Israeli forces also said they killed Hezbollah members they accused of moving weapons near their positions, while Lebanon accused Israel of continuing military pressure in the south.
Qassem rejected any agreement that would include normalisation with Israel, saying Hezbollah would not accept arrangements that give Israel political or security gains.
Meanwhile, international efforts continue, with countries including France and Italy proposing support for Lebanon’s security arrangements after the planned end of the UN peacekeeping mission in the country.
