The Kano State Government has sealed a controversial multimillion-naira film house located in Dorayi, Gwale Local Government Area, citing violations of planning and zoning regulations.
The action follows complaints from residents who had earlier petitioned the Kano State Film Censorship Board over plans to open the facility within their community. Community leaders expressed concerns about the potential impact of the project on security, social harmony, and the moral upbringing of young people.
Officials from the Kano Geographic Information System (KANGIS) sealed the facility during an enforcement exercise known as “Operation Show Your Document.”
Speaking during the operation, KANGIS Director-General Dalhatu Aliyu Sani said the operators failed to provide the legal documents required for the establishment and operation of the facility.
According to him, the management could not present land title documents, building approval permits, or any other relevant authorization.
Sani further explained that even if such documents are later produced, the film house would still face regulatory challenges because it is located in an area designated for residential use.
He stressed that operating a film house within a residential neighborhood contravenes the state's planning and zoning regulations, adding that the facility would remain closed until further notice.
The KANGIS chief also raised concerns about activities observed at the premises during the inspection, saying officials found male and female occupants sharing accommodation within the facility.
He assured residents that the government would continue to address public complaints and protect community interests through strict enforcement of urban planning laws.
The film house was built by renowned filmmaker Sultan Abdulrazaq Dorayi and is considered the first project of its kind in Northern Nigeria. Dorayi is widely recognized for translating Indian films into Hausa and producing movies within the Kannywood industry.
Authorities say investigations and regulatory reviews will continue before any decision is made regarding the future of the facility.
