Kenya Awards $1.2 Billion Nairobi Airport Expansion Contract to Chinese Firm

The Kenyan government has signed a 154.2 billion Kenyan shilling ($1.2 billion) agreement with the China Road and Bridge Corporation to expand and modernize Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi.

Transport Minister Davis Chirchir announced the deal on Tuesday, saying the project aims to increase the airport’s annual passenger capacity from 7.5 million to 22 million travelers.

The expansion plan includes the construction of a new passenger terminal, modernization of existing facilities, and upgrades to both airside and landside operations. The project is expected to strengthen Kenya’s position as a leading aviation hub in East Africa.

The airport upgrade had previously faced delays after Kenya canceled a separate agreement with the Adani Group in 2024. The cancellation followed legal challenges involving the company’s founder in the United States.

Kenya is moving forward with the new project as regional competitors, including Ethiopia and Rwanda, continue investing heavily in airport infrastructure to attract more airlines and international travelers.

To support the project, Kenya has appointed the Trade and Development Bank and the Africa Finance Corporation to arrange financing for the expansion.

Officials say the project will improve passenger experience, boost regional connectivity, and support the country’s long-term economic growth ambitions.
