The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has officially stopped admissions into affiliated degree programmes offered by Colleges of Education, introducing a major change in Nigeria’s teacher education system.
The new policy means the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) will become the main entry route into Colleges of Education from the 2026/2027 academic session.
According to JAMB’s newly released NCE/ND Agric Registration Guidelines, no new admission will be allowed into affiliated degree programmes in any College of Education from the 2026/2027 session.
The Board also announced that direct admission into 100 and 200 levels in Colleges of Education will no longer be permitted, as all new students must begin through the NCE programme.
JAMB said the decision ends decades of affiliated degree programmes, which allowed Colleges of Education to award university degrees through partnerships with universities.
The new policy is expected to affect thousands of candidates who applied for degree programmes through affiliated Colleges of Education for the 2026 admission cycle.
To assist affected candidates, JAMB provided options including changing institutions, transferring to the partner university, or switching to the NCE programme.
Candidates who wish to change institutions have been given until June 22 to complete the process.
