Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that Israel will continue to maintain its military presence in parts of Lebanon and will not withdraw from occupied territory, despite ongoing international efforts to reach a wider ceasefire agreement involving the United States and Iran.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Netanyahu said Israeli forces would remain in what he described as a “security buffer zone” in southern Lebanon “for as long as necessary.” Israel is currently reported to control around 570 square kilometres of Lebanese territory.
The statement comes amid renewed tensions in the region following a prolonged conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, which escalated into cross-border raids and a wider military campaign. The conflict has reportedly killed thousands of people and left large areas of southern Lebanon under Israeli occupation.
Netanyahu also insisted that Israel would continue targeting what he called “Iran’s terror infrastructure,” saying national security concerns outweigh international pressure to withdraw.
The comments appear to complicate diplomatic efforts linked to a US–Iran ceasefire framework, which reportedly includes provisions affecting Lebanon. Some regional leaders have warned that continued Israeli military operations could threaten the fragile agreement.
Israeli officials, including Defence Minister Israel Katz, have echoed Netanyahu’s position, saying Israel will maintain control of strategic buffer zones in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza to protect its borders.
Tensions remain high as diplomatic negotiations continue, with fears that further military escalation could derail ceasefire efforts across the region.
