Three people have been killed in an Israeli strike on a vehicle in southern Lebanon, as Israel and Lebanon continue US-backed negotiations aimed at reducing tensions.
Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported that the attack happened on Thursday on the road between Zawtar and Mayfadoun in Nabatieh Governorate. One other person was injured.
The strike comes despite an ongoing ceasefire, with Lebanese officials accusing Israel of continuing attacks near frontline areas.
Lebanese authorities also said Israeli forces burned several houses in the town of Ain Arab after ordering residents to leave.
Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health said that since the conflict began on March 2, about 4,230 people have been killed and 12,179 injured.
Al Jazeera correspondent Zeina Khodr said the ceasefire remains fragile, with Israeli forces continuing attacks in areas near their occupied positions.
Meanwhile, Israel and Lebanon have been holding talks in Washington over a US-backed proposal that could involve Israeli forces handing over some occupied areas to the Lebanese military.
A US official said Israel had taken a “concrete step” by withdrawing from part of a buffer zone in southern Lebanon.
However, Israeli officials said they would not fully withdraw while they consider Hezbollah a security threat.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said both sides were making progress toward an agreement, calling the talks a significant development.
The United States and Gulf countries also expressed support for the negotiations, saying armed groups outside state control should be disarmed.
Hezbollah has rejected the talks, insisting that Israel must completely withdraw from Lebanon before any agreement is reached.
