Israel has continued carrying out attacks on Lebanon despite a newly agreed ceasefire with Hezbollah, raising concerns that the fragile truce may collapse amid ongoing regional tensions.
Reports said at least 47 people have been killed and many others injured in Israeli attacks on Lebanon since midnight on Friday, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry.
The ceasefire agreement was reportedly reached through mediation by the United States, Qatar and Iran, with the aim of stopping the escalation in Lebanon and supporting wider efforts to end conflicts in the Middle East.
Despite the agreement, reports from southern Lebanon said Israeli forces carried out several air strikes and continued artillery attacks after the ceasefire deadline.
A Gulf diplomat told AFP that the truce was intended to prevent the Lebanon conflict from disrupting broader negotiations linked to the US-Iran agreement and efforts to restore regional stability.
A Hezbollah official said the ceasefire would remain in place if Israel respected the agreement, while Israeli officials also confirmed the truce.
However, residents in southern Lebanon questioned the effectiveness of the ceasefire after attacks resumed shortly after it began.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused Israel of seeking “permanent war” following comments by Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who called for a major escalation.
Meanwhile, planned talks between the United States and Iran over a recently signed memorandum of understanding were postponed after renewed fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.
Iranian officials said negotiations could only continue after the fighting in Lebanon stops, while Washington and Tehran continued discussions through mediators.
