Iran Sets July Funeral and Burial Dates for Late Supreme Leader Khamenei

Iran has announced the official funeral and burial arrangements for its late Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, who was killed earlier this year in a joint United States-Israeli air strike.

According to Iranian state media, funeral ceremonies will begin in Tehran on July 4, followed by additional commemorations in the holy city of Qom on July 7. Khamenei will be laid to rest in his hometown of Mashhad on July 9.

The burial was originally planned for March but was postponed as the conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel continued.

Khamenei, who was 86 years old, led Iran from 1989 following the death of Ruhollah Khomeini. During his nearly four decades in power, he played a central role in shaping Iran's political, military, and security institutions.

His successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, has largely remained out of public view since the outbreak of the US-Israel war with Iran. However, recent comments from Marco Rubio suggested that Mojtaba Khamenei has taken a more active role in state affairs as diplomatic negotiations between Tehran and Washington continue following an April ceasefire agreement.

The funeral ceremonies are expected to attract large crowds of mourners, government officials, and foreign dignitaries, marking a significant moment in Iran's modern political history.
