Five members of the Indian Air Force (IAF) lost their lives after a military transport aircraft crashed during a routine mission in Assam, northeastern India.
According to the IAF, the Antonov An-32 transport plane crashed near Jorhat in Assam on Saturday while carrying out a routine sortie. All five personnel on board were killed in the accident.
The Air Force confirmed that emergency teams were deployed to the crash site and that an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the crash.
Television footage from the scene showed thick black smoke rising from the wreckage, with the aircraft appearing to have broken into several pieces upon impact.
India's Air Force operates a fleet of more than 100 Antonov An-32 transport aircraft, which are used for carrying personnel, equipment, and supplies across the country.
The tragedy recalls a similar incident in 2019 when another An-32 aircraft crashed in Arunachal Pradesh near the Chinese border, killing 13 people.
Authorities are continuing rescue and recovery operations while investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident.
