Bandits Kill 17 Farmers, Injure Several Others in Zamfara Attack

At least 17 farmers have been killed and several others wounded after suspected bandits attacked a farming community in Zamfara State.

The attack occurred on Friday in Goran Namaye village, located in Maradun Local Government Area, while residents were working on their farms during the planting season.

According to local sources, the armed attackers had earlier warned villagers against going to their farmlands. Despite the threats, many farmers continued their activities due to the importance of the farming season.

Witnesses said the gunmen stormed the farms in large numbers and opened fire on the farmers, killing 17 people on the spot and leaving several others injured.

The victims were later buried in a mass funeral, while those wounded were taken to a hospital in Talata Mafara for medical treatment.

A member of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, Maharazu Salisu, condemned the killings and urged both the federal and state governments to take immediate action to tackle the worsening security situation.

He warned that continued attacks on farming communities could discourage agricultural activities and deepen food insecurity across the state and the wider region.

According to the lawmaker, armed groups have become increasingly active in several communities and appear determined to prevent residents from cultivating their land.

He called on security agencies to intensify operations against the bandits and ensure that farmers can return to their fields without fear of violence.

The latest attack highlights the ongoing security challenges facing rural communities in Zamfara State, where farmers and residents continue to face threats from armed criminal groups.
