Former Army Spokesman Rabe Dies in Bandits' Captivity

The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died while being held captive by bandits.

In a statement released on Saturday by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Muazu, the government described the incident as a tragic loss to both Katsina State and Nigeria.

According to the statement, the retired general died from health complications related to diabetes and hypertension while in captivity. Authorities said extensive efforts by the state government and security agencies to secure his release were unsuccessful.

The government noted that General Abubakar's death is a significant loss to his family, Katsina State, and the nation. It added that his passing highlights the continuing security challenges posed by banditry in the region.

Dikko Umaru Radda expressed condolences to the family of the late officer, describing the development as a dark moment for the state. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to working closely with federal authorities and security agencies to combat banditry and bring those responsible to justice.

General Abubakar and his wife were abducted on May 30 while travelling through Katsina State. Reports last week indicated that the kidnappers demanded the release of three detained fighters and the return of livestock allegedly seized during security operations in exchange for the couple's freedom.

The Katsina State Government extended its sympathies to the bereaved family and prayed for the peaceful repose of the late general's soul.
