Iran and Oman have agreed to create a joint committee to discuss the future management of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, focusing on maritime traffic, shipping services, and related fees.
The agreement was announced during a visit by Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to Muscat, where they met with Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq and Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al-Busaidi.
According to a joint statement, the committee will operate under the two countries’ foreign ministries and examine future arrangements for shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, including maritime services and fees in line with international standards.
Iran and Oman also said they would consult with other coastal countries and relevant parties over issues concerning the important waterway.
The two Gulf nations reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz while respecting international law and the sovereignty of the countries bordering the waterway.
Oman also expressed support for a recent Iran-US memorandum of understanding and stressed the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important oil and trade routes, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the wider international maritime network.
