A senior Hamas official has stated that the group is not prepared to surrender its weapons at this stage, while indicating support for a future security arrangement in which only official Palestinian police forces would openly carry arms in the Gaza Strip.
Speaking ahead of renewed Palestinian faction talks in Cairo, Hamas Political Bureau member Husam Badran said visible weapons in Gaza would be limited to those held by official security institutions under a proposed Palestinian administrative framework. However, he stressed that discussions about the future of Hamas's military capabilities would require broader national consensus among Palestinian factions.
The comments come as efforts continue to revive a ceasefire plan and address key disputes between Palestinian groups, Israel, and international mediators. Among the most contentious issues are the disarmament of armed factions, the withdrawal of Israeli forces, and the delivery of humanitarian assistance to Gaza.
Representatives from several Palestinian factions are expected to participate in Cairo meetings aimed at developing a unified position on the ceasefire process and Gaza's future governance. Hamas officials say they are prepared to transfer administrative responsibilities to a national Palestinian committee, although significant political and security obstacles remain.
Analysts note that disagreements over disarmament and territorial control continue to hinder progress toward a lasting settlement. Meanwhile, humanitarian conditions in Gaza remain severe, with concerns over aid access, damaged infrastructure, and ongoing civilian casualties.
The upcoming negotiations are viewed as a critical test of whether Palestinian factions, regional mediators, and international stakeholders can reach common ground on security arrangements, reconstruction efforts, and long-term stability in the territory.
