Armed gunmen have abducted the Vice Chairman of Ifedayo Local Government Area in Osun State, Mr. Debo Farounbi, during an attack on Ora community along the Osun–Kwara border.
The incident occurred around 10 p.m. on Tuesday when the attackers reportedly stormed the community, firing gunshots into the air and causing panic among residents. Farounbi and three other individuals were initially taken by the gunmen.
Residents said security personnel, including soldiers and local vigilantes, engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle, forcing them to release three of the abducted victims. However, the gunmen escaped with Farounbi.
A resident who spoke anonymously said the attackers had already moved the victims toward a nearby forest before security forces intervened.
“Four people were abducted, including two Fulani women and two men. The military's resistance forced the kidnappers to abandon three victims, but they managed to escape with the vice chairman,” the resident said.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Osun State Police Command, Mr. Abiodun Ojelabi, said security agencies immediately responded to the attack and have launched efforts to rescue the victim.
“One person was abducted, and he is the vice chairman of the local government. The military, police, and other security personnel responded promptly. Efforts are ongoing to secure his release,” Ojelabi stated.
The latest abduction is the third such incident reported in Ora community within the past seven months. In December 2025, retired Customs officer Emmanuel Owolabi was kidnapped in the area and later released after spending several weeks in captivity. Another kidnapping occurred in February 2026 when two residents were abducted and later freed after about a month.
Concerned residents have called on authorities to strengthen security presence in the community, warning that continuous attacks could force more people to leave the town.
A market leader, Mrs. Alarape, expressed fears over the worsening security situation, saying many residents were already relocating.
“People are leaving the town, and more may leave unless urgent action is taken. Most of these attackers enter through the boundary with Kwara State,” she said.
Security agencies have intensified efforts to track down the kidnappers and secure the release of the abducted local government official.
