A total of 58,187 candidates sat for the 2026 National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE) conducted by the National Examinations Council (NECO) for admission into Federal Government Colleges across Nigeria.
The Registrar of NECO, Prof. Ibrahim Wushishi, disclosed this while speaking with journalists after monitoring the examination in Abuja alongside the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad.
He said female candidates outnumbered males in this year’s examination, with over 31,000 girls compared to about 26,000 boys.
According to him, the trend reflects ongoing progress in efforts to promote girl-child education in Nigeria, crediting sustained advocacy by the Federal Ministry of Education for the improvement.
“I think this reflects the efforts of the ministry in promoting girl-child education and shows that positive results are being achieved in that regard,” he said.
Prof. Wushishi also noted that the total number of candidates declined slightly compared to 64,578 candidates recorded in 2025.
Despite the drop, he said the examination was conducted smoothly across the country, with reports indicating a largely hitch-free exercise.
The NECO registrar added that the exercise was well-organised nationwide and that candidates behaved properly while examination officials carried out their duties effectively.
Earlier, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, visited selected examination centres in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), including Model Secondary School, Maitama; Government Science Technical College, Garki; and Federal Government Boys College, Apo.
She expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the examination, saying it started on time and proceeded peacefully across the centres visited.
“We have been to three schools and I am happy with the conduct of the examinations in all the three schools,” she said.
She also commended the candidates and officials for maintaining order during the exercise.
