Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has won the 2026 University Duel Competition after an 11-week contest involving 186 students from 62 universities across Nigeria.
The competition, sponsored by MTN Nigeria and now in its second edition, is designed to promote excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) among Nigerian university students.
At the final ceremony held at OAU, participants were tested in Applied Mathematics, Data Analysis, General Knowledge, and Verbal Reasoning. These areas were used to assess students’ academic and analytical abilities.
The Dean of Student Affairs at OAU, Professor John Odedire, praised MTN Nigeria for its support and described the victory as historic. He noted that it is the first time a university has won both the University Duel and the Smart Challenge competitions in the same season.
The founder of STEM Africa Initiative, Oladapo Ojo, said the competition helps students understand the real-life value of STEM education. He also commended MTN Nigeria for supporting the initiative.
MTN Nigeria awarded ₦3 million to the University Duel winners and ₦1 million to the Smart Challenge champions, along with scholarships for outstanding participants.
The organizers said the goal of the competition is to encourage African students to move beyond consuming technology and begin developing their own solutions for the future.
