France has said it will not support the lifting of United Nations sanctions on Iran unless it is satisfied with the terms of any final agreement on Tehran’s nuclear programme.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said France must have a role in negotiations involving Iran, as it is a permanent member of the UN Security Council with veto power.
Speaking to franceinfo, Barrot said there would be no lasting stability in the region unless talks between the United States and Iran also address Iran’s ballistic missile programme and its support for allied groups in the region.
He said any major concessions expected from Iran would be linked to the possible removal of sanctions imposed by the United Nations.
France, Britain and Germany are seeking a role in future talks after concerns that negotiations led by the United States may not fully address nuclear issues and Iran’s missile activities.
The three European countries previously worked with Iran and the United States to reach the 2015 nuclear agreement, which offered sanctions relief in exchange for restrictions on Iran’s nuclear programme.
Barrot added that France would have a say in resolving the crisis because of its position on the UN Security Council.
