Four Dead, 24 Injured in Warri–Itakpe Train Derailment, Says Nigerian Government

The Federal Government of Nigeria has confirmed that four people have died and 24 others sustained serious injuries following a train derailment along the Warri–Itakpe rail line near Agbor in Delta State.

According to the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), four train coaches capsized while another derailed during the incident, which occurred on Monday.

Officials said a total of 442 passengers and 40 crew members, security personnel, and service providers were on board at the time of the accident, bringing the total number of people involved to 482.

Emergency response teams, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), police, civil defence, and Delta State authorities, were quickly deployed to the scene. Rescue operations were completed later in the day, with injured passengers taken to hospitals in Agbor for treatment.

The Ministry of Transportation confirmed that among the injured is an NRC staff member who suffered a serious limb injury but is reported to be in stable condition.

Authorities expressed condolences to the families of the victims and thanked emergency responders for their swift intervention.

An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the derailment, while officials continue efforts to identify all affected passengers and provide support to victims and their families.
