Five Farmers Killed in Plateau Mining Site Attack

Five people were killed on Tuesday afternoon after suspected gunmen attacked a mining site in Gero village, Gyel District of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Residents said the attack occurred around 3:00 p.m., just hours after another security incident was reported near the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, also located in Jos South LGA.

According to a resident, Ritiji Dalyop, the victims were carrying out mining activities when the attackers stormed the site and opened fire indiscriminately.

“Five persons were shot dead by the gunmen,” Dalyop said.

The attack was also confirmed by the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong. The association described the incident as part of growing security challenges affecting communities in the area and expressed concern over the safety of residents.

BYM further referred to an earlier attack around NIPSS, Kuru, which reportedly resulted in the death of three security personnel. The group called on security agencies to urgently intervene to prevent further violence and restore confidence among affected communities.

When contacted, the spokesperson of the Plateau State Police Command, SP Alabo Alfred, said he had not yet been briefed on the incident by officers in the area at the time of reporting.
