Dell and Acer Launch Budget Laptops to Rival Apple’s MacBook Neo, but 8GB RAM Raises Concerns

Major PC manufacturers Dell and Acer have unveiled new budget laptops aimed at competing with Apple’s recently launched $599 MacBook Neo, though early specifications suggest a key compromise in performance, particularly in memory capacity.

Dell has revived its XPS 13 lineup as part of its response, positioning it as a direct competitor to Apple’s entry-level MacBook Neo. The new model is expected to start at $599 for eligible students, while other buyers will likely pay around $100 more for the base configuration.

The entry-level XPS 13 will feature a six-core Intel Core 5 320 processor, 512GB SSD storage, and 8GB of RAM. Higher-end versions will offer improved memory options up to 32GB, along with faster processors and increased storage capacity. A 256GB variant is also expected after launch.

Acer has also introduced the Swift Air 14 as its alternative, offering similar entry-level specifications, including 8GB of RAM and Intel Core 5 processors. However, detailed storage options for the base model have not been fully confirmed.

Industry analysts note that while Apple’s MacBook Neo also ships with 8GB of unified memory, direct comparisons may be misleading due to Apple’s tightly integrated hardware and software design. macOS optimization and unified memory architecture are considered key factors in Apple’s performance efficiency.

By contrast, Windows laptops typically rely on separate hardware components, which can make 8GB of RAM more limiting in multitasking and heavier workloads.

Despite concerns over memory limitations, both Dell and Acer are introducing features that may appeal to buyers, including high-refresh-rate displays, improved connectivity, and modern design elements. Dell’s XPS 13 will include touchscreen support and Wi-Fi 7, while Acer’s Swift Air 14 offers a 120Hz display and a dedicated AI processing unit.

The new laptops are expected to launch later this year, with Dell’s model arriving soon and Acer’s rollout planned for July in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, followed by North America in August.
