The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed September 29, 2026, to deliver judgment on a suit seeking to compel the police to reopen investigations into the death of Nigerian musician, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.
Justice James Omotosho announced the date after hearing arguments from the applicant’s lawyer, Chief Tunde Falola.
The Inspector-General of Police, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, who were listed as respondents in the case, were absent from the court proceedings.
The case was filed by the Registered Trustees of Break the Silence Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, which argued that the earlier police investigation into Mohbad’s death did not fully address key issues.
Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, in Lagos State, under circumstances that have continued to attract public attention.
The foundation told the court that some important details and possible leads were not properly examined, especially concerning people who were reportedly among the last individuals seen with the late singer.
Falola said the organisation approached the court to seek justice, transparency, and accountability, urging authorities to conduct a fresh investigation.
Meanwhile, the court dismissed an application by Samson Obaboye seeking to join the case, ruling that he failed to show sufficient legal interest in the matter.
The suit is a mandamus proceeding aimed at compelling the police authorities to revisit investigations into the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death.
