A severe heatwave sweeping across western Europe has caused record-breaking temperatures, with France, the United Kingdom, and Spain experiencing some of their hottest days ever recorded.
Millions of people are facing dangerous heat, with temperatures reaching nearly 41°C in Paris and authorities issuing red heat alerts across several regions.
France recorded its hottest day since records began, with the country’s national temperature indicator reaching 30°C, based on average day and night temperatures from multiple locations.
Several areas in western France recorded temperatures between 39°C and 43°C, while parts of Spain’s Basque region also approached 42°C.
The extreme heat forced major landmarks, including the Louvre Museum and Eiffel Tower in Paris, to close earlier than usual.
Officials warned of increased risks from heat-related illnesses, wildfires, and water shortages. At least 40 people have reportedly died in heatwave-related incidents in France.
The United Kingdom also recorded its hottest June day on record, with temperatures reaching 36.1°C in Gosport, Hampshire, while forecasts suggested some areas could approach 38°C.
Spain reported its highest daily average temperature for June since records began, while Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, and other European countries also issued heat warnings.
Scientists say climate change is contributing to rising temperatures across Europe, making heatwaves more frequent and intense.
Some cooler conditions are expected later in the week, but authorities continue to urge residents to stay safe and avoid heat-related dangers.
