The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced a Boko Haram member, Alkali Yarima, also known as La’ari, to death by hanging for his involvement in the 2015 attacks in Maiduguri, Borno State.
Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment on Friday, ruling that Yarima was guilty of participating in terrorist activities linked to the deadly attacks.
The court also sentenced him to life imprisonment on a charge related to receiving weapons training and preparing to carry out acts of terrorism.
Yarima was further handed a 35-year prison sentence on one count and a 30-year jail term on another. He also received additional 10-year sentences on several other charges.
The Federal Government had filed a seven-count terrorism charge against the convict, accusing him of belonging to Boko Haram, a proscribed terrorist organisation in Nigeria, between 2009 and 2015.
The prosecution said Yarima had accepted teachings from Boko Haram founder Mohammed Yusuf and later participated in activities connected to terrorism.
The court heard that he had also travelled to an Arab country for training in arms and weapon handling in preparation for terrorist operations.
The Federal Government said the conviction showed its commitment to fighting terrorism and related crimes in Nigeria.
The trial, which is usually conducted at Kainji in Niger State, was moved to the Federal High Court in Abuja.
