Rescue teams are racing against time to find survivors after two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela, killing more than 900 people and leaving thousands injured.
Authorities said at least 920 people have died and more than 3,300 others have been injured following the devastating quakes, which hit several areas including Caracas and La Guaira. Many people remain trapped beneath collapsed buildings as emergency workers continue search and rescue operations.
Officials said at least 172 people are still believed to be trapped under the rubble, while rescuers are working within the critical first 72-hour period when survivors are most likely to be found alive.
The disaster has caused severe damage, with hundreds of buildings affected. In La Guaira, one of the hardest-hit areas, residents described the destruction as looking like a “war zone.”
International assistance has begun arriving, with rescue teams, medical workers, equipment and supplies coming from countries including the United States, Colombia, Mexico, Spain and other nations.
However, the rescue effort has faced major challenges, including damaged infrastructure, aftershocks and shortages of heavy equipment. Some residents have called for more volunteers to help clear debris using basic tools.
Venezuela’s healthcare system, already weakened by years of shortages and economic difficulties, is struggling to handle the large number of injured victims. Doctors warned that hospitals are facing shortages of essential supplies and resources.
Humanitarian organizations said the recovery effort could take months, as many displaced families are left without homes, food, water and medical support.
Officials continue to urge people to stay away from heavily damaged areas to allow emergency teams to move injured victims and deliver aid more efficiently.
