Israeli strikes on Lebanon have killed at least 20 people, according to Lebanon’s state news agency, just a day after a ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah took effect.
Israel said the strikes were in response to rocket fire launched by Hezbollah. The Israeli military said the group fired more than 50 projectiles at Israeli forces in southern Lebanon, prompting attacks on what it called Hezbollah targets.
Lebanon’s National News Agency reported that Israeli warplanes and drones carried out strikes in several areas of southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley.
Hezbollah accused Israel of violating the ceasefire and warned that continued attacks would not go unanswered. The group called on Washington to pressure Israel to stop its operations.
The Israeli military said it remained committed to the ceasefire and was acting defensively, while promising to respond to any threats against its forces or civilians.
The renewed violence has raised fears that the ceasefire could collapse and affect wider diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions in the region.
A major Israeli strike hit a residential building in the town of Barish in southern Lebanon, killing a family of four, including two children, according to local officials. Another strike reportedly killed a Lebanese soldier.
Both Israel and Hezbollah have accused each other of violating the ceasefire, as tensions continue along the Lebanon-Israel border.
