The Bauchi State Police Command has rescued a four-year-old boy and arrested two suspected kidnappers following an intelligence-led operation in Bauchi metropolis.
According to the command's spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, the operation was launched after the victim's father reported the disappearance of his son from their residence at Gida Dudu Housing Estate.
Police investigations revealed that one of the suspects, 39-year-old Muhammad Usman, allegedly lured the child away from his home on June 9 before taking him to the residence of a second suspect, Hayatudeen Ahmad, 40, who also resides in the estate.
Investigators said Usman allegedly deceived Ahmad by claiming that the child was his nephew and that the boy's mother was seriously ill. He reportedly requested that the child be allowed to stay overnight, promising to take him to Kano the following day.
Further investigations showed that the suspect later sent a ransom demand of N5 million to the child's family.
Acting swiftly on the complaint, detectives from the State Intelligence Department tracked the suspects and located the child at Ahmad's residence. The boy was rescued unharmed and reunited with his family.
The two suspects have been taken into custody and are assisting investigators. Police said they will be charged in court upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations.
The Commissioner of Police in Bauchi State, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, commended the officers involved in the operation for their professionalism and quick response. He reaffirmed the command's commitment to protecting residents and warned that kidnappers and other criminals would face the full weight of the law.
The commissioner also urged parents and guardians to educate children about the dangers of interacting with strangers and to promptly report any suspicious activities involving children to law enforcement authorities.
Authorities say investigations into the circumstances surrounding the kidnapping are continuing.
