Austria has urged the European Union to consider bringing artificial intelligence company Anthropic under Europe’s jurisdiction as a way to protect access to advanced AI technology following reported US restrictions on foreign use of the company’s most powerful models.
In a letter to EU Technology Commissioner Henna Virkkunen, Austria’s State Secretary for Digitalisation Alexander Proell said Europe must avoid being excluded from major technological developments.
“Let us jointly explore the strategic establishment and participation of Anthropic within the European Union,” Proell wrote, adding that Europe could offer legal certainty, market access, investment and a regulatory environment aligned with the company’s values.
He acknowledged that the proposal could face doubts over its practicality but argued that Europe must decide whether it wants to shape its own technological future or remain dependent on decisions made elsewhere.
Anthropic, the developer of advanced AI models, did not immediately comment on Austria’s proposal.
The move comes after the European Commission introduced plans aimed at strengthening Europe’s domestic cloud computing, artificial intelligence and semiconductor industries while reducing reliance on major US technology companies.
Austria said hosting Anthropic in Europe could help boost innovation and ensure the continent remains competitive in the global AI race.
