The Federal Government has announced plans to introduce a nationwide digital platform designed to address long-standing challenges caused by fragmented education data across Nigeria.
The platform, known as the Digital National Education Management Information System (DNEMIS), will be officially launched alongside the Public DNEMIS Portal and the inauguration of state implementation teams.
Speaking during a media briefing in Abuja, the National Project Coordinator of the Special Programmes Operations and Implementation Unit under the Ministry of Education, Adebayo Onigbanjo, said the initiative was created to improve education planning, policymaking, accountability, and service delivery.
He explained that for many years, Nigeria’s education system relied on scattered data collection methods, inconsistent reporting, and limited access to accurate information, making effective planning difficult.
According to him, the Federal Ministry of Education developed the Nigeria Education Data Infrastructure (NEDI) as a national framework to coordinate and strengthen education data management.
“DNEMIS is a major step towards building a modern, integrated, and digitally driven education management system,” Onigbanjo said.
The platform is expected to capture information on every learner, teacher, school, and education investment in a unified national database.
Officials said DNEMIS would support government decisions on budgeting, resource allocation, monitoring, and education reforms using reliable real-time data.
The Special Assistant to the Minister of Education on Digital Communications and E-Learning, Mojoyin Adebajo, said the system was developed on the internationally recognised District Health Information Software 2 (DHIS2) platform.
She added that DNEMIS would digitise the Annual School Census, replacing manual data collection with a more efficient digital process.
The Public DNEMIS Portal will also make selected education data available to researchers, journalists, development organisations, policymakers, and the public.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, saying a reliable national education database would improve transparency, accountability, teacher deployment, infrastructure planning, and overall education development in Nigeria.
