Australia Extends Fuel Tax Relief to Reduce Pressure on Households

The Australian government has announced an extension of fuel excise relief for another month in an effort to reduce the impact of rising living costs on households.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the measure would keep petrol and diesel prices 16 cents per litre cheaper than normal rates throughout July, saving motorists about A$11 per fuel tank.

“This additional temporary support will help reduce the pressure of rising petrol prices and assist Australians facing higher living costs,” Albanese said.

The government had previously reduced fuel excise and removed a road user charge for three months until the end of June after fuel prices increased following tensions and conflict in the Middle East.

Australia, which relies heavily on imported fuel, has faced supply challenges and rising energy costs due to disruptions linked to the Iran conflict.

Albanese said families were still experiencing financial pressure and warned that the global conflict could continue to affect the economy for a longer period.

The extension follows another government decision to continue releasing petrol and diesel from national reserves until September to help maintain supply.

The government said the measures were aimed at supporting households while global energy markets remain uncertain.
