At least 31 people have died and dozens more were injured after an overcrowded bus plunged into a deep ravine in northern Ethiopia on Monday, police have confirmed.
The accident occurred on a winding mountainous road in the Amhara region while the bus was travelling from the town of Dessie toward the capital, Addis Ababa. Authorities said the vehicle veered off the road in the early hours of the morning and fell about 100 metres into a valley.
Rescue officials reported that several passengers died because medical help arrived too late. Survivors were reportedly taken to hospital by locals due to limited ambulance and emergency response services in the area.
The crash highlights ongoing concerns about road safety in Ethiopia, where poor infrastructure, lack of road signage, and difficult terrain contribute to frequent and often deadly traffic accidents. According to official data and UN reports, road fatalities in the country have risen significantly in recent years.
In a similar incident in December 2024, 71 people were killed when a truck carrying passengers fell into a river in southern Ethiopia.
Authorities are expected to continue investigations into the cause of Monday’s crash.
