A confidential report prepared for the United Nations and seen by AFP stated that armed jihadists linked to the Lakurawa group raided the Fesken Rafi community in the Arewa district, near the border with Niger Republic.
The attackers reportedly killed more than 20 people during the assault.
The incident is believed to have occurred a few days earlier but was only publicly reported after a visit by the Kebbi State deputy governor to the affected area. Authorities have not confirmed the exact date of the attack.
Security analysts say the attack may indicate a resurgence of violence by the Lakurawa group, which had been relatively inactive in recent months. The group is also believed to be attempting to demonstrate its operational strength despite ongoing military pressure.
The report also highlights concerns that Lakurawa’s activities could evolve into a broader cross-border security threat due to its multinational composition. The group is believed to have links to extremist networks operating in the Sahel region, although experts remain divided on its exact affiliations.
Northern Nigeria has continued to face violence from armed groups and criminal gangs, often referred to as “bandits,” who carry out killings, kidnappings, and extortion in rural communities.
Authorities and security agencies have yet to issue a full official statement on the latest attack.
