Police in Pakistan mistakenly kill Australian child during robbery response

A 10-year-old Australian girl has been killed by police gunfire in eastern Pakistan during a mistaken identity incident, authorities confirmed.

According to Punjab police, officers were responding to a robbery case when they exchanged fire with suspects who were allegedly holding a family hostage at gunpoint inside a vehicle. In the confusion, a police officer wrongly believed the suspects were trying to escape in the victims’ car and opened fire.

The statement said this “erroneous decision” led to the death of the young girl, identified as Hania, and injuries to her father and brother.

The incident occurred in Punjab province, Pakistan’s most populous region. Police said the officer involved has been arrested and is currently in custody after appearing in court. A formal investigation has been launched.

The girl’s family, originally from Perth, Australia, was reportedly visiting relatives in Pakistan at the time of the shooting.

Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as “deeply distressing” and called for a full and transparent investigation. The Australian government also confirmed it is providing consular support to the injured family members.

Punjab police expressed regret over the tragedy, stating that while officers often operate in high-risk situations, there is “no justification for a departure from protocol.”

The case has sparked diplomatic concern, with both Pakistani authorities and the Australian government pledging accountability and a thorough inquiry.
