At least 39 residents of Magamin Diddi community in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State have been abducted by armed bandits while attending a dialogue aimed at reconciling with the parents of a notorious bandit leader.
According to the Zamfara State Police Command, 47 community members travelled to Fadama Forest on June 7 to meet the parents of a suspected bandit kingpin known as Jimo Smally in an effort to promote peace and dialogue.
Police spokesperson Yazid Abubakar said the meeting was interrupted when the bandit leader allegedly arrived with members of his gang and forcefully took away 39 participants to an unknown location.
The incident was officially reported to the Divisional Police Officer in Maradun by the district head of Magamin Diddi on Monday.
Security agencies have since launched a rescue operation, deploying personnel and intelligence resources to trace the victims and secure their release.
In a separate operation, the Zamfara State Police Command announced that three suspected bandits were killed during a joint security raid in Taza, Wuya and Gwaram villages within the Jangebe Forest area of Anka Local Government Area.
The operation, led by Commissioner of Police Ahmad Muhammad Bello and involving the Violence Crime Response Unit alongside Civil Security Volunteers, resulted in the recovery of three AK-47 rifles, 23 rounds of ammunition, three magazines and 10 motorcycles. One suspect was also arrested, while several others reportedly escaped with gunshot wounds.
Police said the operation marked the first successful security incursion into the Jangebe Forest axis, which had long been considered a stronghold for criminal groups. Authorities pledged to continue offensive operations against banditry across the state.
