Health authorities have reported a worsening Ebola outbreak in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with the death toll rising to an estimated 131 people out of 513 suspected infections, according to officials.
The surge in cases has prompted the World Health Organization to call an emergency committee meeting to assess the situation and consider possible response measures, including vaccine strategies and containment efforts.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he is “deeply concerned” about how quickly the outbreak is spreading, noting that the epidemic has already crossed into neighboring Uganda.
The outbreak, driven by the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus disease, is particularly worrying because there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment for this variant. Health experts warn that the strain can have a fatality rate of up to 50%.
Officials say the epidemic began in the northeastern Ituri province, a region near porous borders and active mining routes that allow frequent cross-border movement, contributing to its spread.
While some supplies, including protective equipment and medical materials, are being delivered to affected areas, health agencies say more support is urgently needed. International partners are also discussing possible treatment arrangements for infected foreign aid workers, including a reported case involving a U.S. citizen.
WHO experts are expected to evaluate available evidence on experimental protection measures and coordinate the global response strategy as the outbreak continues to expand.
