The United States has confirmed plans to withdraw around 5,000 troops from Germany, marking a fresh strain in relations between Washington and its NATO allies in Europe.
The Pentagon said on Friday that the drawdown would take place over the next six to twelve months following a review of U.S. military deployment in Europe. Officials stated the decision reflects “theater requirements and conditions on the ground.”
The move comes as tensions grow between the U.S. and the European Union, with President Donald Trump also announcing a planned increase in tariffs on EU-made vehicles to 25% next week. He accused European countries of failing to comply with a previously agreed trade deal.
Trump has repeatedly criticized German leadership, including Chancellor Friedrich Merz, over foreign policy positions related to Iran and Ukraine. He also suggested that the U.S. may reduce troop levels in other European countries such as Italy and Spain, depending on their stance toward ongoing conflicts.
Germany currently hosts more than 36,000 U.S. troops, including personnel at key installations such as Ramstein Air Base, which plays a major role in American military operations in Europe and beyond.
German officials have responded cautiously, saying they are prepared for potential reductions but stressed that major U.S. bases remain strategically important for both countries and NATO operations.
The European Union, meanwhile, has emphasized that the U.S. military presence in Europe remains vital for regional security, especially in light of ongoing tensions with Russia following the war in Ukraine.
Germany continues to be one of the largest European supporters of Ukraine, providing significant military and financial aid after the United States.
