Israeli Airstrikes in Southern Lebanon Kill 12 Civilians as Ceasefire Tensions Escalate

At least 12 civilians have been killed and several others injured following a series of Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon’s Nabatieh and Sidon regions, according to Lebanese health authorities and local reports.

The strikes reportedly targeted multiple towns, including Harouf, Choukine, and areas in the Iqlim al-Tuffah highlands. In the town of Haboush, officials confirmed eight deaths—including a child and two women—while 21 people were wounded, among them children and a woman. A separate strike on Zrariyeh in the Sidon district reportedly killed four people, including two women, and injured others.

Ongoing Tensions Despite Ceasefire Claims:

The attacks come amid claims of a ceasefire arrangement between Lebanon and Israel, which reportedly took effect on April 17. However, Lebanese authorities and media outlets say Israeli military activity has continued, including airstrikes, border demolitions, and reported incursions in southern Lebanese territory.

Israeli media also reported air raid alerts in several northern settlements after drones were allegedly launched from Lebanese territory, indicating continued cross-border tensions.

Border Security Measures and Military Activity:

Reports also indicate that Israeli authorities are considering the creation of a so-called “buffer zone” along the border, potentially affecting more than 50 villages in southern Lebanon. Lebanese officials have described such proposals as violations of sovereignty.

Meanwhile, armed groups in Lebanon have continued to claim retaliatory operations against Israeli military positions, using drones and missiles in response to ongoing strikes.

The latest escalation follows months of heightened regional instability. While a ceasefire agreement was reportedly reached following earlier diplomatic developments, both sides have accused each other of violations.
