Spanish police have arrested a 25-year-old man accused of killing his parents and injuring four other people, including his young son, in a shooting incident in southern Spain.
The attack took place overnight in the city of El Ejido, located in Almeria province, according to authorities.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Guardia Civil said the suspect allegedly opened fire late Monday night, leaving two people dead and four others seriously wounded.
The injured victims, who were taken to hospital in critical condition, include the suspect’s son, another minor, a man and a woman.
Police said specialist units arrested the suspect around 4 a.m. following the shooting.
Investigators are currently trying to determine the motive behind the attack, which authorities believe may be linked to domestic violence.
Officials also confirmed that the suspect did not possess a legal firearm licence, and police are investigating how he obtained the weapon used in the shooting.
Gun violence is relatively uncommon in Spain due to the country’s strict firearm regulations and low levels of gun ownership compared with many other European nations.
According to data from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Spain recorded 53 firearm-related homicides in 2023, one of the lowest rates in Europe.
