At least 10 people have been confirmed dead after torrential rainfall triggered severe flooding and landslides across parts of southern and central China.
Chinese authorities said the extreme weather system, stretching across more than 1,000 kilometres, has entered its most dangerous phase, prompting emergency responses in several provinces.
According to the China Meteorological Administration, orange weather alerts for heavy rain and violent storms remained in effect on Tuesday as rescue operations continued in the affected regions.
The Chinese government activated a Level-IV emergency flood response in provinces including Hunan and Guangxi, while maintaining similar emergency measures in Hubei, Guizhou and Chongqing.
State media reported that six people died in Guangxi after a pickup truck carrying 15 passengers was swept into a swollen river during heavy rainfall.
In Hubei province, three people were reportedly killed by flash floods that struck a low-lying village, while another fatality was recorded in southern Hunan.
Videos circulating on Chinese social media showed streets submerged in floodwater in the city of Jingzhou, with vehicles almost completely underwater and residents wading through knee-deep water.
Authorities have suspended transportation services, closed schools and businesses in several affected communities, and relocated residents from high-risk areas.
Meteorologists blamed the disaster on the convergence of moist air currents from the Bay of Bengal, the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean, which intensified rainfall across a large region.
Weather officials warned that the severe weather system is expected to continue moving east and south over the coming days, with more heavy rainfall forecast along the Yangtze River basin.
