Three Injured as Section of Zaria Central Mosque Collapses During Construction

At least three people were injured on Wednesday when a section of the Zaria Central Mosque under reconstruction collapsed during construction work in Zaria, Kaduna State.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the incident occurred when the decking of the second-floor structure near the southern minaret gave way while workers were carrying out casting work.

Eyewitnesses said the injured victims were construction workers who were quickly evacuated to a hospital in Zaria for treatment. No fatalities were recorded in the incident.

Following the collapse, the construction site was cordoned off as workers cleared debris from the affected area. The cause of the structural failure had not been immediately confirmed at the time of reporting.

Efforts to reach the site engineer for comments were unsuccessful, as he was said to have accompanied the injured workers to the hospital.

The spokesman of the Zazzau Emirate Council, Malam Abdullahi Kwarbai, did not confirm or deny the details of the incident, noting that the reconstruction project had been handed over to a technical committee and later to the construction company handling the work. He added that a formal groundbreaking ceremony had been conducted before construction began, and said the council would not comment further for now.

Authorities are expected to review safety and structural procedures as reconstruction work continues.
