A Russian drone attack has damaged a Chinese-owned cargo ship in the Black Sea near Ukraine’s Odesa region, according to Ukrainian officials, in an incident that occurred just before Russian President Vladimir Putin’s scheduled visit to China for talks with President Xi Jinping.
Ukrainian maritime authorities said two civilian vessels were struck while approaching ports in southern Ukraine. One of them, identified as the KSL Deyang, is reportedly owned by Chinese interests and was sailing under a foreign flag when it was hit. Despite the damage, Ukrainian naval sources confirmed that none of the Chinese crew members on board were injured, and the vessel was able to continue its journey.
The Ukrainian navy said the strike was part of a wider overnight assault involving hundreds of drones and missiles launched by Russian forces across Ukrainian territory. Ukrainian officials described it as one of the largest coordinated aerial attacks in recent months.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strikes, saying they targeted both civilian infrastructure and international shipping routes, raising concerns about maritime safety in the Black Sea.
Russia has not commented directly on the specific vessel strike but has continued its campaign of attacks on Ukrainian port facilities since the start of the conflict.
The incident comes at a sensitive diplomatic moment, as Moscow prepares for high-level discussions with Beijing. China has maintained a neutral stance on the war, repeatedly calling for negotiations while avoiding condemnation of Russia’s invasion.
The damage to a Chinese-linked commercial vessel is likely to add diplomatic sensitivity to the already complex relations among Russia, China, and Ukraine.
