A cruise ship linked to a hantavirus outbreak has arrived in Rotterdam, Netherlands, for full disinfection after a voyage that triggered international health alerts and multiple quarantines across several countries.
The MV Hondius entered the Dutch port on Monday morning with 25 crew members and two medical staff on board. All passengers had previously disembarked at earlier stops and were transported to their home countries for isolation.
Health authorities confirmed at least 11 infections connected to the outbreak, including nine confirmed cases, with three fatalities reported. Among the deceased were a Dutch couple believed to have been exposed in South America.
Crew members on the vessel were seen wearing protective masks as the ship was guided into port. Officials said the remaining crew would be placed under immediate quarantine upon arrival.
The outbreak prompted a large-scale international response, with passengers being evacuated in full protective gear at earlier stops, including the Canary Islands, before being flown to more than 20 countries for monitoring.
Health agencies in several countries, including Canada and the United States, have confirmed cases or placed passengers under medical observation. International health authorities, including the World Health Organization, have been notified.
The Dutch health ministry said the ship would undergo thorough decontamination under strict public health protocols before being cleared for future operations. Authorities also confirmed that a full inspection will be conducted before the vessel is allowed to sail again.
Experts say this is the first known hantavirus outbreak reported on a cruise ship, raising concerns among global health officials about infection control on long-distance passenger voyages.
